Hydrogen fuel injection among Liebherr highlights

Among the many advancements featured at Bauma 2022 in Munich, Germany – including a prototype hydrogen combustion engine and a plethora of electrification solutions – Liebherr highlighted its developments in fuel injection for hydrogen fuel systems. To showcase its efforts, the company included a “demonstration” of a hydrogen direct injection system as part of its display.

Development efforts in this area are targeted at addressing the differences, and challenges, associated with hydrogen fuel systems, including the need for dry running capabilities and the risks of embrittlement of metals due to the diffusion of hydrogen into the material.

The company’s Fuel Systems business has been working to address the specific needs of hydrogen fuel systems for some years, including through development of low-pressure direct injection (LPDI) technology.

The LDPI development efforts have focused on injectors with injection pressures of 30 to 60 bar (435 to 870 psi).

The injectors can be used as part of a common rail system in a spark-ignited engine or as part of a dual-fuel system. A high-pressure direct injection system will be required for use in compression ignition engines, the company noted.
