Terex harbour cranes for UK

A Terex Gottwald HMK 170 E mobile harbour crane has been delivered to St Peter Port Harbour in Guernsey, UK.

St Peter Port Harbour port is undergoing a UK£13.75 million (US$20 million) refurbishment of its freight handling facilities. As part of the project four existing cranes will be replaced with two from Terex. The new cranes will have the capacity to handle 50,000 tonnes of container freight a year.

The 63 tonne capacity HMK 170 E lifts to a radius of 38 metres and can run from onboard diesel generators. To avoid exhaust emissions in port, however, the cranes can be connected to an 11 kV electrical shore supply.

The crane was manufactured at Terex Port Solutions’ production facility in Düsseldorf, Germany, and transported to Antwerp, Belgium, for transfer by barge to Guernsey. The second crane, to be supplied during phase two of the project, will follow the same route.

Part of the refurbishment is already done, including the demolition of a quayside portal crane and a 32 tonne quayside scotch derrick crane. Terex Port Solutions was responsible for the demolition. In phase two the company will demolish the remaining two cranes.

Speaking on the project, Captain Peter Gill, St Peter Port harbour master, said, “When fully operational, the two Terex Gottwald mobile harbour cranes will be doing the work of the four former cranes, with obvious benefits in terms of the utilisation of available space and operational efficiency.

“The transfer of the crane from the barge to the quayside was carried out during a limited window of opportunity, dictated by the 10 m tidal rise and fall, which we experience at the harbour. The delivery and commissioning processes were carried out in a thoroughly professional manner.”
