SPOA looks to form lifting group

The Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA) has announced that it is looking to establish a specialist lifting sub-group within its operations, that aims “to shape the future of the sector”.

Callum Mackintosh, SPOA President, said, “The SPOA would like to establish a dedicated working group for the lifting sector as there are many issues that need to be addressed now to ensure a better future for the industry, not least attracting young people to the sector and also the challenges presented by the different terms and conditions for contract lift versus crane hire.”

The organisation is to hold an open meeting for lifting sector companies, which will take place in Dunblane on the 24 May, 2022, in order to ensure the sector is better represented.

It follows an initial industry meeting, held two months ago, at which lifting sector companies voiced their concerns.

Mackintosh said, “It has been brought to our attention that businesses in this sector feel that their specific needs and interests are not being addressed.

“This meeting, which is open to anybody working in the lifting sector in Scotland, is an opportunity to come and talk to us and see how we can come together and shape the future.”

According to the association, a more collaborative approach would deliver mutual benefit, particularly when it comes to recruitment.

The SPOA said it is working to drive apprenticeships and to attract young people into the industry, and that it would like to extend this to the lifting sector in Scotland.
