PCL takes two Shuttlelift gantries

PCL Industrial Services, Inc. has taken delivery of a DB70 double-beam mobile gantry crane and a SB30 single-beam mobile gantry crane from manufacturer Shuttlelift for use at its site in Bakersfield, California.

PCL manufactures steam generators, pressure vessels and tanks for the oil industry. Until now, it has moved these vessels with boom cranes and forklifts.

“We were looking for ways to move product faster and safer,” said Kelly Blain, fabrication and engineering manager at PCL.

With a rubber-tyred mobile gantry crane, operators can lift a load directly beneath the crane’s frames, which is much simpler and safer than coordinating a tandem lift by other means, said Blain, “Normally it would have taken us six and a half hours to lift and move a tank. With the new Shuttlelift DB70, it took us 13 minutes,” Blain commented.

The DB70 features dual trolleys with power spacing, which allows PCL to adjust the longitudinal spreaders to the proper distance for vessels of various diameters.

PCL is using the Shuttlelift DB70 to lift and move large pressure vessels and tanks, while the Shuttlelift SB30 is responsible for basic material handling, which used to be done with forklifts. This includes lifting smaller vessels and pipe bundles.
