Liebherr’s port cranes for Maher

By Niamh Marriott11 October 2021

Maher Terminals LLC, based at the port of New York and New Jersey in the USA, has ordered three new Liebherr ship to shore (STS) megamax container cranes.

The cranes will take their place alongside the existing eight Liebherrs at the terminal

The cranes will take their place alongside the existing eight Liebherr STS cranes at the terminal. The first two were supplied in 2012 with a further two in 2014 and four in 2016.

With a span of 30.48 metres, a back reach of 22.9 metres, an outreach of 69.5 metres and a lift height over rail of 53.34 metres, the megamax cranes are designed to handle the world’s largest container vessels.

Speaking about the order, Liebherr managing director of sales, Gerry Bunyan, said, “We are delighted with this latest order to be able to continue our longstanding relationship with Maher Terminals.

“With these latest technically advanced machines working alongside the other Liebherr STS cranes at the port, we are confident Maher Terminals will be able to offer improved services and faster turnarounds to their customers and continue to grow as North America’s largest marine container terminal.”

The company wants to have a net zero facility by 2040

The cranes will assist Maher in becoming a net zero emissions facility by 2040, the company said.

The STS cranes are manufactured using high tensile steel and with a lattice main beam and boom. Lighter weight cranes require less energy to operate than traditional cranes.

The crane drives include an active front end, which generates electricity when lowering and returns it to the grid. The Liebherr Liduro drive system optimises energy requirements and power management.

High efficiency LED flood lights reduce energy consumption by 70 per cent over traditional fixtures and are designed to reduce glare and light pollution.
