Kalmar ship to shore crane

A pair of Kalmar ship-to-shore (STS) and three rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes are destined for Mexico’s IPM Altamira terminal on the Gulf of Mexico, in the state of Tamaulipas.

Cargotec’s Kalmar port crane division, has signed a contract to supply Infraestructura Portuaria Mexicana (IPM) with the new cranes and also with Kalmar SmartPort process automation solutions for the RTGs. IPM Altamira already has a Kalmar STS crane, eight Kalmar RTGs and Kalmar mobile equipment, including terminal tractors and forklifts.

The new STS cranes will be super post-panamax size with an outreach of 21 container rows. Capacity will be 65 tonnes under the spreader which will have twin-lift capability. The RTGs can handle 6+1 wide with 1-over-6 high stacking with 40 tonnes of lifting capacity. Part of the specification is the Kalmar SmartRail automated gantry steering system with Container Position Indication (CPI), which automatically controls the gantry on the travel path and feeds the container position information to the terminal operating system.

Troy Thompson, sales vice president at Kalmar Americas, “We are very pleased to have been selected to support IPM with its ambitious growth plans for the Altamira terminal.”

All the cranes are scheduled to be delivered together and handover is scheduled for the first quarter of 2021.
