Born on March 7, 1955 to Charles and Esthermae Young, he graduated from The Haverford School and attended Lehigh University. A natural leader, he was a proud owner and business partner of George Young Company, founded in 1869. George Young: 1955-2018

Young was on the board of the General Building Contractors Association (GBCA) in Philadelphia. He followed in his father’s footsteps with a passion for moving works of fine art. He orchestrated many important moves, including the Liberty Bell, LOVE statue, the Rocky Sculpture and many other priceless treasures. He was an industry leader in “moving the impossible.”

George Young Company joined the SC&RA in 1964, and Young was an active member. His experience with the association was extensive, serving on the Crane & Rigging Group and the Allied Industries Group, the Crane & Rigging Tower Crane Committee, Editorial Advisory Committee and Magazine Task Force. He has also served on numerous SC&R Foundation Committees and was elected to both the SC&RA and SC&R Foundation Board of Directors, serving as Treasurer. Young also was elected to the SC&RA executive committee where he reached the highest volunteer position in the organization, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2004-2005. He also served on the Nominating Committee and Strategic Planning Committee. Young was currently serving on the Board of Directors as a past Chair, on the Past Chairman’s Council and was the current Chair of the Insurance and Risk Management Committee.

“George had an incredible passion for SC&RA, the Foundation, the industry and most importantly, he had great love and respect for his friends, competitors and colleagues,” said Joel Dandrea, chief executive officer, SC&RA. “George was a man of great pride and a total conviction to quality. Karin was blessed to have a husband who was so entirely dedicated and in love with her. We have lost a great man and a very good friend.”

Young was a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan as well. Dandrea said he talked to him on Super Bowl Sunday at which time Young sang the Eagles fight song over the phone. Seeing the Eagles win the Super Bowl was a life-long wish, Dandrea said.

In addition, Young was passionate about horticulture, the preservation of fine arts, travelling and entertaining friends and family.

SC&RA and KHL Group extend their condolences to his wife Karin Young and the Young family. Services will be held at 1 p.m. March 17 at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, 625 Montgomery Avenue, Bryn Mawr, PA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to Specialized Carriers & Rigging Foundation (www.scr-foundation.org) or to a charity of your choosing.
