The Dockwise Vanguard, the world’s largest semi submersible heavy transport vessel (HTV), has completed its first float-on operation.

The load is the Jack and St Malo platform hull, which weighs 56,000 tonnes. The operation was carried out at the Silli-Do deep hole near the Samsung Heavy Industries yard in Geoje, South Korea.

“The float-on operation was precisely and safely executed as planned. It took no more than four hours before the cargo stood firm on her cribbing,” said Ronald Goetheer, Dockwise project manager.

The Dockwise Vanguard will take the 56,000 tonne hull around the Cape of Good Hope before heading towards the Kiewit yard in Ingleside, Texas, USA. It is expected to arrive mid-April.

Vanguard has a loading capacity of 110,000 tonnes. It can also offer offshore dry-docking. The deck is 275 x 70 metres and there is a 27 MW propulsion system consisting of two fixed propellers aft and two retractable azimuth thrusters at the bow. These can reach a maximum speed of 14 knots (11 to 13 knots with cargo).
