California-headquartered Quantum Fuel Systems has delivered a series of VPLite-H virtual pipeline compressed hydrogen trailers to Certarus.

Certarus, with offices in Calgary, Alberta and Houston, Texas, offers a range of energy delivery solutions covering natural gas (CNG), renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen. The company delivers to utility, agricultural and industrial customers not connected to a fixed pipeline.

“We chose to expand our partnership with Quantum because of their extensive experience working with hydrogen, and the proven quality of their virtual pipeline trailers that enable us to safely deliver zero-emission energy anywhere our customers need it,” said Curtis Philippon, CEO of Certarus.

The trailers are modified versions of Quantum’s VP Lite 40 ft natural gas trailers, updated to haul hydrogen. They have a gas mass of 803 kg at 3600 psi (248 bar).

Quantum also offers a virtual pipeline hydrogen trailer with a gas mass of 1195 kg at 5000 psi (345 bar).

“Quantum’s VP Lite for natural gas hauls the most gas in the industry in a 40-foot container and has an excellent track record. Using that proven platform, but modified for hydrogen at 3600 psi, is a great starting point to begin transporting gas for hydrogen projects,” noted Mark Arold, president of Quantum.

“Our partnership with Certarus on hydrogen is just the beginning, and we look forward to continuing to support Certarus’ vision and leadership, as well as work with other companies interested in mobile hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel solution.”
