Al Faris supplies Liebherr giant for vessel construction

Rental house Al Faris supplied a 1,000 tonne capacity mobile crane for Seajack specialist builder Lamprell to lift and place the top two segments of self elevating lift boat Leviathan in the UAE.

Lamprell opted to rent the region's first 1,200 tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 mobile crane from Al Faris Rental, to lift and place the top two segments of the Seajacks four legs.

The alternative option for Lamprell was to use a pair of Al Faris's 500 tonne Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 cranes in a tandem lift operation with both cranes being rigged on luffing jib configuration. This was ruled out as the cranes would have had to be repositioned for each of the four legs.

The four legs, each with a height of 86.46m, incorporate eight segments. For the 7^th and 8^th segments, each weighing 52 tonnes, the crane was positioned alongside the Seajack to provide a 26 m radius and capitalise on the cranes telescopic boom - capable of reaching a height of 100 m.

The crane was configured with 202 tonnes of counterweight and an 88.30 m boom length with superlift, and an 18 m hydraulic offset fly jib to complete all four legs. The 1,000 tonner also carried out a dual lift with an LTM 1500-8.1 position a Huisman marine crane at the stern of the Seajack for permanent installation. The LTM 11200-9.1 was configured with a 53.3 m boom and superlift and the LTM 1500-8.1 with a 31.7 m boom to lift the 138 tonne Huisman in a top and tail operation.

The Seajack Leviathan is a self propelled, self elevating lift boat intended for harsh conditions and was commissioned to install wind turbines in the North Sea. Equipped with the latest Class 2 dynamic positioning technology the vessel is fitted with high standard accommodation for up to 90 people, says Liebherr.
