Using the Liebherr LR 1500 to assemble wind turbines

Russian crane company Avtokran-Tjumen has added a new Liebherr LR 1500 crawler crane to its fleet for wind work.

The 500 tonner is at work constructing wind turbines on the Adygeyskaya WES wind energy construction project in the Republic of Adygea in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation. Main contractor for the turbines, Avtokran-Tjumen, ordered the crane during the Bauma exhibition in April. Beforehand it conducted technical studies to determine the best choice of crane.

The combined output of the 2.5 MW wind turbines will offer a total power rating of 150 MW. The LR 1500 can be used without a derrick system for wind turbines up to 100 metres, which saves money, and with a derrick system for hub heights up to 130 metres.

Avtokran-Tjumen bought its first Liebherr crane in 1999. It was a used 4-axle, 55 tonne capacity, all terrain. Now the company has Liebherr cranes up to 500 tonnes capacity and works on projects from Siberia to Kazakhstan and from Belarus to the Far East, Liebherr said.
