Manufacturer Manitowoc has unveiled a new four axle, 70 tonne capacity, all terrain crane, the Grove GMK4070L.

Visitors to the Bauma exhibition in Munich, Germany. will be able to see it from 24 to 30 October. The manufacturer claims it has “the strongest load charts and the longest boom in its class at 60 metres.”

With the main boom fully extended to 60 metres, the crane lifts 4.4 tonnes. At 49 metres the capacity is 8.3 tonnes. Capacity at the maximum, 46 metre, radius is 1 tonne. Adding the 15 metre swingaway jib gives a 78 metre maximum tip height.

“The Grove GMK4070L offers improved engineering design and adopts several latest technologies to deliver a new level of performance, operation, serviceability, and fuel efficiency,” said Andreas Cremer, vice president of product management for mobile cranes at Manitowoc. “It’s a crane that will be a true game changer, surprising many customers with just how much more a 70 tonne all terrain crane can achieve.”

Take to the road

For road travel at 16.5 tonnes per axle, in the UK, as much as 17.8 tonnes of counterweight can be carried. Its maximum total counter weight is 19 tonnes. At 12 tonnes per axle, 13.3 tonnes can be carried, with 5.3 tonnes onboard for 10 tonnes per axle configurations.

Power for the single engine design is from a six-cylinder 320 kW (430 HP) Mercedes-Benz OM470LA diesel to Euromot 5 (Tier 4 Final) emissions regulations. It can run on HVO fuel, Manitowoc said. The drivetrain includes a Telma retarder to help with braking and to reduce wear on the conventional wheel braking system. Tech includes ECO mode which can be used in conjunction with the transmission’s Fuel Saver mode to help reduce fuel consumption.

A new feature is the Grove digital platform for access to fleet data. The Maxbase outrigger optimisation system is optional.
